A little background bout the Ladies

The Lady Gee-Gees have been part of the competitive club services of the University of Ottawa since 2004.

Through the hard work of Amy Richardson, Andrea Cardin and Julie Holsworth the club was created and kept alive until today.

The team's first year was mainly a building year as it finished last at the Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CUUC) in Hamilton, ON that year. However, in 2005, the Lady Gee-Gees came 4th at the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC) and were undefeated at the CUUC in Montreal, QC that same year before the tournament was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

In only it's third year, the Lady Gee-Gees went on to win the CUUC 2006 in Ottawa, ON without losing a single game all tournament! The team has greatly improved and has started to attract more and more players to its tryouts and practices.

In the Spring of 2007, the team entered for the first time the UPA College Series and attended the UPA Upstate NY Sectionals in Geneva, NY. They continued their undefeated streak on the first day beating RPI 15-1, Skidmore 15-1 and the second seeded Rochester 15-9 and were thus scheduled for the championship game the next day against Cornell A. Unfortunately, once again due to adverse weather conditions the finals were postponed as it snowed overnight (yes! in mid-April). Unfortunately the team could not make it down to Geneva the next weekend due to exams but ever since the team had its sights set on one thing: UPA nationals!

In 2008, the University of Ottawa had a fantastic year. The Lady Gee Gees won CEUUC for the first time. The team did not compete at the CUUC because it was held in Vancouver. They did manage to make it out to Trouble in Vegas, one of (if not THE) largest tournament in the States that year. With 11 players, the Lady Gee Gees went undefeated all weekend long, taking down teams like Wisconsin and Washington in the playoffs before besting UCLA in the finals. Ottawa rolled through sectionals and regionals that year, having only 12 points being scored on them in both tournaments combined. In their first showing at the UPA national championships in Boulder, CO, the team had many exciting games and fell just short of a semis appearance, finishing T-5th overall.

The Lady Gee Gees came back full force for the spring of 2009, once again winning CEUUC ’08 and another Canadian fall tournament, the Carleton Invite. This season marked two flying tournaments in the new year: Pres Day and Centex. At Pres Day, the team fared well against west coast teams, as the Gee Gees finished T-3rd. The high costs that season associated with flying to multiple tournaments prevented many players from attending Centex. However, while only having 10 players at the tournament, the team played hard and well and ended up finishing 1st against a talented UCSB squad. Ottawa ended up winning both sectionals and regionals again, this time over much improved Maryland, Cornell, uPenn and Penn state teams. At UPA nationals, the team again had a good showing in Ohio but finished T5th after a loss to Oregon in the quarterfinals.

The next season (2009-2010) saw a rebuilding year, having lost a good portion of its handling core. The team still went on to win CEUUC and CUUC in the fall, but struggled a little at Centex, placing 8th. At sectionals during the 2010 spring season, the Lady GGs placed 2nd after losing to a strong Cornell squad in the finals. Going into regionals as the underdogs, and with only 2 bids to nationals, the GGs knew that they would have to upset a few teams in order to go to Wisconsin.

There were 6 very capable teams of winning the tournament: Pitt, Maryland, uPenn, Penn State, Cornell and Ottawa. In pool play, Ottawa beat uPenn in a very intense and close matchup. Pitt and Maryland won all of their games and so they played each other in the finals. Pitt won the matchup, meaning Maryland would have to play in the back door finals against the winner of a rematch game from the day before: Ottawa and uPenn. This time around, uPenn came out firing. They led Ottawa 8-3 at halftime. After an inspiring speech from Ottawa’s coaches at halftime, Ottawa clawed their way back and won on universe point, 13-12. In the following game, the backdoor finals, Ottawa was unfortunately on the receiving end of a similar comeback. Up 11-7, Ottawa started to make more mistakes and Maryland came back to win 13-12. The GGs were disappointed for the regionals loss that cut their season short, but this also gave them the drive and determination for next season – they wanted it that much more.

This season started off with another CEUUC and CUUC victory in the fall of 2010. With a fresh crop of rookies, the team travelled to Pres Day 2011 and finished 7th. This result wasn’t as high as they had hoped for, and in the months following the GGs tweaked their strategies on O and D and refocused before Keystone Classic. At this tournament, the team fared exceptionally well, beating teams like Pittsburg 15-4, Tufts 14-7, Ohio State 13-2, and Penn State 11-6 on their way to their first place finish. Ottawa also won both the USAU conference championships and USAU Metro East regionals, avenging last year’s losses by beating a solid Cornell squad in both of the finals 11-8 and 13-8, respectively. Qualifying for USAU nationals for the 3rd time in its short existence, the Lady Gee Gees are looking to better their previous performances at the big show.
